the Ode to Irene

My good friend Kat’s (owner of  The Little Knittery in Los Angeles) octogenarian mother Irene is constantly knitting. She’s probably the most prolific knitter I know (with Kat coming in a close second), and her project of choice are these simple boxy style sweaters.

When I was playing around with swatching these colors in this stitch pattern I knew I wanted to make a sweater and I immediately thought of Irene, how a style of her sweater would perfectly show off the colors/pattern.

The Ode to Irene is a simple, drop shoulder pullover made from the bottom up and joined by working a 3 needle bind off on the shoulders and sides. This pattern is a “one size” though it is simple to adjust or modify because there isn’t any shaping!

Made with 1,140yds/1,049meters of Illimani’s “Amelie” a mulberry silk, merino, alpaca blend that is super lightweight and soft and size US 10/6mm needles.

inspired words:

“Do not get lost in a sea of despair.
Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime.
Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”
Rep. John Lewis 1940 – 2020
